GM’s Oil Life Monitoring System and simplified vehicle maintenance schedule will save you time and money while maintaining your GM vehicle.

So, what are the GM Oil Life System and the simplified maintenance schedule?

GM’s Oil Life System takes the guesswork out of when to change your vehicle’s engine oil.

Instead of the old industry standard of every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, GM owners can rely on their vehicle to let them know when it’s time.  This could save you on 2 to 3 oil changes per year, based on 15k miles driven annually.  GM’s advanced technology uses an algorithm that tracks engine revolutions and temperature along with driving conditions (stop and go driving/highway driving/combination of both) to predict the oil life percentage based on those parameters.  Simply wait for the Oil Life monitor light to appear on the dash.

The first time the light appears, GM recommends a Maintenance I,  or MI, service is performed (see below for description).  The next time the light comes on, a Maintenance II, or MII, service is performed (see below).  Then, based on the Oil Life Monitor light, alternate between MI and MII services.  It is that simple.  (Maintenance I service is recommended every 12 months, even if the Oil Life Monitor does not come on).

Maintenance I
  • Perform when Change Engine Oil light comes on or within 10 months since vehicle was purchased
  • Perform when Maintenance II was last schedule used

During Maintenance I the following services are performed:
  • Change the engine oil and filter
  • Reset oil life system
  • Inspect engine air cleaner filter - replace as needed
  • Rotate tires and check inflation pressures and wear
  • Inspect brake system
  • Check engine coolant and windshield washer fluid levels - add fluid as needed
  • Perform any needed additional services

Maintenance II
  • Perform when Maintenance I was last schedule used
Maintenance II includes everything in the Maintenance I package plus the following additional items:
  • Inspect suspension and steering components
  • Inspect the engine cooling system
  • Inspect the wiper blades
  • Inspect restraint system components
  • Lubricate body components
  • Inspect the throttle system
